Ingredients

  • 4 oz light or medium dry red wine, such as Rioja
  • 1/2 to 1 oz brandy or rum
  • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 medium navel orange, cut into roughly 1-inch pieces, seeds removed
  • 1/2 large apple, cored and cut into roughly 3/4-inch dice
  • 3 oz club soda or seltzer water, well chilled
  • 1/2 tbsp simple syrup, plus more to taste
  • Ice, for serving (optional)
  • Orange wedges, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pitcher, mix the red wine with brandy or rum, and stir in the orange and lemon juices.
  2. Add the diced orange and apple to the pitcher and twist the orange and lemon zests to release the oils into the mixture, then add the zests to the pitcher.
  3. Stir to combine, then refrigerate until fully chilled, for at least 2 to 8 hours (preferably around 4 hours).
  4. Gently stir in the club soda into the pitcher.
  5. Mix in the simple syrup, adjusting to taste, and add more brandy or rum if desired, followed by additional simple syrup to reach the desired sweetness.
  6. Optionally, fill glasses with ice, ladle the chilled sangria into glasses, garnish with orange wedges, and serve.
