Spicy Smoked Devil

This smoky and spicy cocktail, called the Little Devil, combines the bold flavors of tequila and mezcal with a touch of sweetness from cherry liqueur and a subtle heat from Ancho Reyes, a spirit made with macerated dried poblanos. The rim of the glass is coated with a smoky-sweet salt and sugar mixture, adding an extra layer of flavor to each sip.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp. smoked salt
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 1/2 oz. ancho chile liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. mezcal
  • 1/2 oz. tequila
  • 3/4 oz. cherry liqueur
  • 3/4 oz. lime juice
  • 1/4 oz. agave
  • 3 brandied cherries, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, pulse the salt and sugar until fine; transfer to a bowl and set aside.
  2. Dip the rim of a rocks glass in simple syrup, then into the salt mixture, and set aside.
  3. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine ancho chile liqueur, mezcal, tequila, cherry liqueur, lime juice, and agave.
  4. Shake the mixture vigorously and strain it into the prepared glass filled with ice.
  5. Garnish with brandied cherries.
