Ingredients
- 1 orange
- 1/6 grapefruit
- 2 whole cloves
- 5 oz full-bodied fruity red wine
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/4 star anise pod
- 1/4 tsp whole allspice
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp ground mace
- 5 oz ruby port
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Pierce the oranges and grapefruit with cloves and bake for 90 minutes, turning once.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, heat brown sugar and 3 cups of wine until sugar is dissolved.
- Combine the wine and sugar mixture, remaining wine, and spices in the slow cooker.
- Cut the baked fruit into quarters and add them to the slow cooker along with any fallen cloves.
- Cook on high for 4 hours, then remove the fruit and press out the juice into the slow cooker.
- Strain the mixture and return it to the slow cooker.
- Rinse off the pulp from the cinnamon sticks and return them to the slow cooker.
- Add the port, reduce heat, and let it simmer for 1 hour before turning to warm.
