Ingredients

  • 1 orange
  • 1/6 grapefruit
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 5 oz full-bodied fruity red wine
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 star anise pod
  • 1/4 tsp whole allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground mace
  • 5 oz ruby port

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Pierce the oranges and grapefruit with cloves and bake for 90 minutes, turning once.
  3. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat brown sugar and 3 cups of wine until sugar is dissolved.
  4. Combine the wine and sugar mixture, remaining wine, and spices in the slow cooker.
  5. Cut the baked fruit into quarters and add them to the slow cooker along with any fallen cloves.
  6. Cook on high for 4 hours, then remove the fruit and press out the juice into the slow cooker.
  7. Strain the mixture and return it to the slow cooker.
  8. Rinse off the pulp from the cinnamon sticks and return them to the slow cooker.
  9. Add the port, reduce heat, and let it simmer for 1 hour before turning to warm.
