Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Separate the egg white from the yolk, placing the yolk in a bowl and setting the white aside.
  2. Whisk the sugar into the egg yolk until the mixture becomes pale yellow and fluffy. Set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and freshly ground nutmeg until just before boiling.
  4. Remove from heat and gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking to combine.
  5. Return the mixture to the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens. Do not let it boil.
  6. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract and bourbon if desired, then cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  7. Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
