Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1-2 tablespoons bourbon, rum, or Cognac (optional)
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, for serving

Instructions

  1. Crack the eggs and separate the yolks into a medium bowl, and keep the whites in a large bowl.
  2. Whisk the egg yolks with the granulated sugar until smooth, creamy, and lightened in color.
  3. Add the whole milk, heavy cream, and liquor (if using) to the egg yolk mixture, and whisk until well combined.
  4. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or longer if aging the eggnog.
  5. Just before serving, beat the reserved egg whites until stiff peaks form using a stand mixer or hand mixer.
  6. Gently fold or stir the beaten egg whites into the eggnog for a frothy, extra-creamy texture.
  7. Transfer the eggnog to a pitcher or punch bowl, and serve in individual glasses with a grating of nutmeg on top.
