Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon, plus more for garnish
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup bourbon or rum (optional)
  • Whipped cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla and gently bring the mixture to a low boil.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk egg yolk with sugar until it becomes pale in color.
  3. Slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolk in batches, whisking until combined.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until slightly thickened, ensuring it coats the back of a spoon but does not boil.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in heavy cream and, if using, bourbon. Refrigerate until chilled.
  6. When ready to serve, garnish with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
