Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1 lemon wedge
  • 1/8 orange, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons dry gin
  • 1/4 cup chilled Ginger Ale (or Ginger Beer)
  • Candied Cranberries
  • 1 sprig of mint
  • Crushed ice

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, bring the sugar and water to a boil and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Then, measure one cup of syrup, and refrigerate any extra for later use.
  2. Reheat the syrup and let it boil, then reduce the heat to medium. Add the cranberries and simmer for 2-3 minutes until they start to burst. Remove from heat and let the cranberries cool in the syrup.
  3. Set aside 3 candied cranberries for garnish. In a large pitcher, combine drained cranberries, cranberry syrup, lemon wedges, and orange slices. Use a muddler or wooden spoon to mash the fruit vigorously.
  4. Stir in the gin and let the mixture steep for at least 5 minutes. Then, strain it into a medium pitcher.
  5. Fill a glass with crushed ice and pour in the ginger ale or ginger beer.
  6. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and half of the cranberry mixture. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds, then strain the liquid into the glass. Repeat for the second serving.
  7. Garnish each glass with the reserved candied cranberries and a sprig of mint.
