Ingredients

  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 scraped vanilla bean (or 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon (or more, up to 1/4 cup)
  • 1/4 cup dark rum (or more, up to 1/2 cup)
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg (plus more for garnish)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (cold)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the egg yolk until it starts to thicken and turn pale yellow, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Slowly add sugar while beating until fully combined and the mixture forms a ribbon when beaters are raised. Beat in vanilla bean or extract until combined.
  3. Gradually add milk while mixing, then mix in bourbon, rum, and nutmeg.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat heavy cream until medium-soft peaks appear, then fold it into the egg mixture.
  5. Transfer the egg nog to a storage container and refrigerate for at least several hours or up to a month.
