Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz apple brandy (or whiskey, bourbon, or cognac)
  • 1/2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 oz blackberry shrub
  • Crushed ice
  • Fresh mint for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place the blackberries in a nonmetal bowl or pitcher; add the apple cider vinegar, sugar, and salt. Stir well, cover, and refrigerate for 1 to 2 days.
  2. Transfer the berry mixture into a nonreactive saucepan and simmer for about 10 minutes. Strain the mixture into a fine-mesh sieve over a heatproof container, pressing the blackberries to extract all liquid. Discard the solids.
  3. Store the shrub, covered and refrigerated, for up to 6 weeks. Makes about 1 quart of concentrate.
  4. In a cocktail shaker, combine the brandy, lemon juice, orange juice, and blackberry shrub with ice. Shake well until cold and combined.
  5. Strain the mixture over cocktail glasses filled with crushed ice.
  6. Garnish with fresh mint.
